Zum 340. Todestag von Athanasius Kircher
(geboren am 2. Mai 1602 in Geisa (im Hochstift Fulda), gestorben am 27. November 1680 in Rom)
und dem 370. Jahrestag der Veröffentlichung seines Hauptwerkes „Musurgia universalis …“

Der Polyhistor, Theologe und Musiktheoretiker Athanasius Kircher erhielt neben seiner Schulausbildung früh eine Zusatzausbildung in Musik, Mathematik, Physik und Geographie. Im Jesuitenorden in Paderborn genoß er ab 1620 eine wissenschaftliche Ausbildung mit Studien in Logik, aristotelischer Physik und Metaphysik, welche durch das Theologiestudium in Mainz abgerundet wurde. Es folgten zahlreiche Professuren für Mathematik, Moralphilosophie sowie für semitische und orientalische Sprachen unter anderem in Würzburg und Avignon. Seine 1634 angetretene Professur in Rom hatte Kircher bis zu seinem Tode inne. Hier entstand auch der größte Teil seines grandiosen Hauptwerkes.

Sehr schöner und hervorragend erhaltener Schweinsleder-Holzdeckelband der Zeit mit blindgepressten Rollenstempeln und 2 Plattenstempeln: Luther und Melanchthon. The most comprehensive compendium of musicology in the 17^th century

  OUTSTANDING AND MOST BEAUTYFUL COPY WE HAVE EVER SEEN of the original FIRST EDITION of Kirchner's main work. "A truly comprehensive compendium of the science of music for its time. Kirchner availed himself of the cooperation of specialist scholars and religious brothers all over the world. He himself was one of the great polymaths of his time. In the Musurgia he developed devices for sound transmission, acoustic listening and monitoring systems, constructions of music automatons and a composing machine, which was even built several times. His cosmological view of music led him to the realization of a connection between the character of sound and human temperaments. In the spirit of antiquity, he developed a kind of music therapy." (MGG VII, 939). The text is further illustrated with numerous woodcuts of instruments, musical notation, mathematical and philosophical diagrams in the text, some full-page. The multifaceted and richly decorated work is "interesting as a source on the concept of music of the Baroque period, especially on the theory of style and affect" (Riemann, Musik-Lex. I, 924). Organ building is treated in detail.
