EXTRAORDINARY RARISSIMUM: ONLY 25-30 COPIES AS FIRST EDITION! ONE OF THE RAREST OPERA SCORES BY WAGNER ONLY 4 COPIES WORLDWIDE TRACABLE FOR US In order to support the success of his new opera and to ensure a rapid distribution of his opera, which premiered at the Royal Court Theater in Dresden on January 2, 1843, Wagner decided, as he had done with his opera Rienzi, to have a score produced at his own expense by the Fürstenau Company, based on the handwriting of a copyist, using the autographic transfer printing method. Only 25 or 30 copies of the score were completed on January 15, 1845. A title page was apparently not included with all copies; for our copy, which is also missing the title page, it was nicely facsimiled and mounted. According to the Wagner Werksverzeichnis (WWV, p. 233), of the 30 copies produced, only two surviving copies are listed, in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek Berlin (Mus. Kw 65 Rara) and in the National Archive of the R. Wagner Foundation in Bayreuth. We were able to locate a third copy in the Austrian National Library (Mus.Hs.3253/1-2). In the antiquarian trade since 1928, however, we could not trace a single copy of this first edition! The present copy of the first edition contains the entire opera in one volume, as recorded in WWV, p. 223, and not like the copies of the version in two volumes recorded by Fuld and Klein as well as in the Austrian National Library with p. 150, which was used twice, as the last page of volume 1 and the first page of volume 2. The first edition is of special importance not only because of its extreme rarity, but also because it is the only publication of the original version of the opera. The second edition, which appeared much later and was produced by C.F. Meser (Adolph Fürstner) between 1872 and 1877 in a combination of an autograph lithographic reprint by a copyist's hand and three engraved numbers, contains various reworkings by Wagner (see WWV, p.235). - Klein p. 16/17 with 25 copies; Fuld, Book of world-famous music, p. 229. EINE DER SELTENSTEN OPERNPARTITUREN VON WAGNER NUR 4 EXEMPLARE WELTWEIT FÜR UNS NACHWEISBAR Um den Erfolg seiner neuen Oper zu unterstützen und für eine schnelle Verbreitung seiner am Königlichen Hoftheater in Dresden am 2. Januar 1843 uraufgeführten Oper zu sorgen, entschied sich Wagner, wie schon bei seiner Oper Rienzi, auf seine Kosten eine Partitur nach der Handschrift eines Kopisten im autographischen Umdruckverfahren von der Firma Fürstenau herstellen zu lassen, die in nur 25 oder 30 Exemplaren am 15. Januar 1845 fertiggestellt wurde. Ein Titelblatt wurde anscheinend nicht allen Exemplaren beigegeben, für unser Exemplar, bei dem auch das Titelblatt fehlt, wurde dieses schön faksimiliert und einmontiert. Von den 30 hergestellten Exemplaren sind laut Wagner Werksverzeichnis (WWV, S. 233) nur zwei erhaltene Exemplare aufgeführt, in der Deutschen Staatsbibliothek Berlin (Mus. Kw 65 Rara) und im Nationalarchiv der R. Wagner-Stiftung in Bayreuth. Wir konnten noch ein drittes Exemplar in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek (Mus.Hs.3253/1-2) lokalisieren. Im antiquarischen Handel seit 1928 konnten wir allerdings kein einziges Exemplar dieser Erstausgabe nachweisen! Das vorliegende Exemplar der Erstausgabe enthält die gesamte Oper in einem Band, wie im WWV, S. 223 verzeichnet und nicht wie die bei Fuld und Klein sowie in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek verzeichneten Exemplare der Version in zwei Bänden mit der S. 150, die doppelte Verwendung fand, als letzte Seite von Band 1 und erste Seite von Band 2. Der Erstausgabe kommt nicht nur aufgrund der extremen Seltenheit eine besondere Bedeutung zu, sondern auch deswegen, weil es die einzige Veröffentlichung der Urfassung der Oper ist. In der zweiten Ausgabe, die sehr viel später erschien und die von C.F. Meser (Adolph Fürstner) erst zwischen 1872 und 1877 in einer Kombination eines autographierten lithographischen Umdrucks von Kopistenhand und von drei gestochenen Nummern hergestellt wurde, sind diverse Umarbeitungen Wagners enthalten (s.h.
