First edition of one of the only two musicological works of the many-sided Jesuit who called for the restoration of the harmonic system of the Greeks and Romans. The main theme of his work is to refute the assertion of Aristoxenes that the Greeks in their music made use only of the octave divided into 12 semitones. Requeno here considers Pythagoras and even Ptolemy as the destroyers of ancient music by introducing their proportions of intervals. He also insists that harmony existed in Greek music and attributes the introduction of counterpoint to the famous general Lysander, a contemporary of the poet Tyrtaeus. - RISM B VI 2, 697; Hirsch I, 501; Wolffheim I, 966. - Erstausgabe eines der beiden einzigen musikwissenschaftlichen Werke des vielseitig interessierten Jesuiten, der die Wiedereinsetzung des harmonischen Systems der Griechen und Römer forderte.
