A WONDERFUL PAYMENT OF A BETTING DEBT The complete part of the first bass of the hunting song in Presto with the text by Franz Bernus after Walter Scott: "On you lords and ladies beautiful, day already it becomes on the height and the lively hunt is there / falcon and horse and dog are near ... The barking of hounds and the sound of horns resound loudly everywhere..." The hunting song was written for the Frankfurt jurist and test poet Franz Bernus as a redemption of a bet at a meeting in Bingen in the summer of 1837, according to Mendelssohn's letter accompanying the sending of the piece of 1.12.1837. In this letter, Mendelssohn apologizes for paying off his "old debt" so late and reports on the work on this composition: "Believe me that it has given me much pleasure to compose the pretty, melodious words, especially the first song (probably meant is No. 1 Jagdlied) ... Your verses compose themselves easily and as if by themselves, and so you would do me a real favor if you sent me more." The song, composed on November 27, 1837, was first published in Leipzig / London in 1873 as the first of the "Vier Lieder" op. 120 in a collected edition. - MWV, G 21. EINE WUNDERVOLLE BEGLEICHUNG EINER WETTSCHULD Die vollständige Stimme des Ersten Baß des Jagdlieds in Presto mit dem Text von Franz Bernus nach Walter Scott: "Auf ihr Herrn und Damen schön, Tag schon wird es auf den Höhn und die muntre Jagd ist da / Falk und Pferd und Hund sind nah ... Hundgebell und Hörnerschall tönet laut schon überall ... ". Das Jagdlied entstand für den Frankfurter Juristen und Testdichter Franz Bernus als Einlösung einer Wette bei einem Treffen in Bingen im Sommer 1837, laut Mendelssohns Begleitbrief zur Übersendung des Stückes vom 1.12.1837. In diesem Brief entschuldigt sich Mendelssohn, dass er so spät seine "alte Schuld" abträgt und berichtet über die Arbeit an dieser Komposition: "Glauben Sie mir daß mirs viel Freude gemacht hat die hübschen, wohlklingenden Worte zu componieren, namentlich das erste Lied (gemeint ist wohl Nr. 1 Jagdlied)... Ihre Verse componieren sich leicht und wie von selbst, und so thäten Sie mir einen wahren Gefallen, wenn Sie mir mehr schickten." Das am 27.
