WAGNER OFFERS HIS RIENZI TO THE OPERA OF STUTTGART Unprinted letter - Interesting document on the history of theater in Stuttgart. - Letter of request from the still young Kapellmeister Richard Wagner to the Königliche Hoftheater-Intendanz in Stuttgart. Wagner had sent the book and score of his opera "Rienzi" to the Court Theater with the request to decide by "four weeks at the latest whether or not to accept it for performance." " ... My fee conditions are: Five and twenty louisd'or, payable at the purchase of the score, and: half of the gross income of the sixth performance of the opera, which would be announced to the audience as a benefit of the composer. ...". - On the back of the letter is a full-page draft of the reply letter to Wagner. " ... the Intendanz (presumably Wilhelm von Taubenheim) ... regrets infinitely that it cannot make use of this at this moment, since it will not buy a new opera for the time being due to the upcoming theater construction. ..." The rebuilding of the Stuttgart Court Theater took place in 1845 - The premiere of "Rienzi" took place in 1842 in the newly opened Semper Opera in Dresden and Wagner had his first musical success with it. Wagner hatte das Buch und Partitur seiner Oper "Rienzi" ans Hoftheater geschickt mit der Bitte bis "späthestens in vier Wochen über die Annahme oder Nicht-Annahme zur Aufführung derselben" zu entscheiden. " ... Meine Honorar-Bedingungen sind: Fünf und Zwanzig Louisd'or, bei dem Ankauf der Partitur zahlbar, und: die Hälfte der Brutto-Einnahme der sechsten Vorstellung der Oper, welche als Benefiz des Komponisten dem Publikum anzukündigen sein würde. ...". - Auf der Briefrückseite befindet sich ein ganzseitiger Entwurf des Antwortschreibens an Wagner. " ... die Intendanz (vermutlich Wilhelm von Taubenheim) ... bedauert Sie unendlich, hievon in diesem Augenblick keinen Gebrauch machen zu können, da sie wegen des bevorstehenden Theaterbaues vorerst keine neue Oper kauft. ..." Der Umbau des Stuttgarter Hoftheaters erfolgte 1845. - Die UA von "Rienzi" fand 1842 in der neueröffneten Semper Oper in Dresden statt und Wagner hatte damit seinen ersten musikalischen Erfolg.
