  • MATTER OF THE HEART - DEFENSE OF HIS CONSERVATOIRE Very interesting and content-rich letter to a friend, a music critic, who published an article about the "Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson", founded by Charpentier in 1902, and about whose unjustified criticism he severly complains. The conservatoire was a matter of the heart for Charpentier. It was intended to provide musical education to broad segments of the population. By 1914, his conservatory, for which he had recruited many distinguished music professors, had developed into one of the most successful and enduring musical institutions of the pre-war period. The letter clearly shows Charpentier's emotions towards what he saw as unjustified criticism of M.P. (Mimi Pinson), saying that it was falsifying the work and also that it was completely unnecessary to advertise so negatively: "Vous comprenez que n'est pas la peine de nous faire de la publicité à rebours", especially because there are already too many people interested in our failure: "Il y a deja trop de gens interesés à notre insucces". Furthermore, Charpentier points out the effect of such statements for the formation of public opinion and how unpleasant this criticism is also for his professor colleagues.
