  • IMPORTANT DOCUMENT ON THE HISTORY OF THE SUCCESS OF CARMEN - CONTRACT FOR TRANSLATION INTO GERMAN - BASIS FOR THE BREAK THROUGH IN VIENNA - Interesting document on the reception history of "Carmen", one of the most famous and successful operas. After the premiere of "Carmen" on March 3, 1875 in Paris did not have the desired success, the newly appointed director of the court opera in Vienna - Franz von Jauner - lobbied for a performance in Vienna. Bizet agreed to a new version with recitatives and a translation into German, and a contract was signed as early as May 1875. - The present document is the confirmation of the assignment of the rights for the translation of the opera. "The undersigned hereby confirms that he has taken over the adaptation and translation of Bizet's opera Carmen for the fixed fee of 400 fl. (four hundred guilders), and that this translation hereby passes into the complete ownership of Herr Direktor Jauner ... [signed] J. Hopp". Julius Hopp was librettist and translator for this new version. - Bizet had died on June 3, 1875 at the age of only 38 and was unable to participate in the sensational success and breakthrough of his opera with the German premiere in Vienna in German. Within a few years, the opera was part of the permanent opera repertoire worldwide.
